Sustainability in Graphic Design: Questions worth asking
Businesses are starting to make an economic shift, finding balance between people, our planet, and profit. Making an effort to show consumers you care about you’re your ecological footprint is essential to building a successful brand image. If you are considering green changes in your company make sure you do it from the inside out, meaning put the internal initiatives in place before the brand message goes live. If you claim green, people will hold you to it and expect longevity in your practices throughout the community. From a designer point of view there are a few questions we may review internally before presenting our strategy to the client:
1. Is it designed to minimize waste?
2. Can it be smaller or lighter?
3. Does it use renewable resources?
4. Is it designed to be multifunctional or durable?
5. Are the materials available in a less toxic form?
6. Is it made or produced locally? If these decisions are made right at the beginning, chances are the new methods will be repeated and in certain cases improved upon as time goes on.
Final thought: “You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself.” Nelson Mandela
